Fire service ladder: replace rung

Our portable fire service ladders are designed in such a way that individual defective rungs can be replaced by competent persons. When replacing rungs, make sure that defective rungs are replaced by defect-free rungs of the same type. The strength of the side-rails must not be impaired.

Replacing rungs: step by step

Saw, hammer, water pump pliers, flaring tool, new rung

Damaged rung to be replaced. Note: Replace max. two rungs on one ladder section using this method.

Saw out damaged rungs at a distance of approx. 20 mm from the inner edge of the side-rail.

Saw in the flanged rung ends in two places. Caution: Do not damage the side-rail of the ladder.

Press the end of the rung together with water pump pliers.

Remove the compressed rung from the ladder.

Cut replacement rung to size. Note: Length of rung = outer width of ladder section + 6 mm

Insert the rungs into the square opening. Note: The rung must protrude evenly on both sides.

Fix the conductor upright on the flare plate. Coat the flanging head with grease. Rotate the flanging head at an angle until the material is flush with the bar. Repeat on the other side. Caution: Prevent spar deformation, e.g. by using squared timber strips.

Insert the widening device into the rung.

Fix the expander to the ladder stile. Tighten nut until rung rests against inner ladder stile. Note: slight, visible widening without gap between rung and stile. Caution: strong tightening can cause cracks on the side-rail.
