What is a telescopic ladder?

Telescopic ladders are ladders consisting of three or more rung/step elements with telescopic side rails. The side rail adjustment mechanism allows you to adjust the ladder length to suit the task at hand. This makes a telescopic ladder very versatile, compact to store and easy to transport before and after use.

What types of telescopic ladder are available?

Telescopic ladder types

A telescopic straight ladder has two telescopic side rails that consist of elements that can be retracted into each other. The ladder cannot stand freely; it is generally leaned against a vertical surface. The telescopic straight ladder is standardised in DIN EN 131-6.
A telescopic hinged ladder can be used like a multi-purpose/multi-function ladder. They come as straight ladder and as step ladder versions. The telescopic hinged ladder is a hinged ladder with sliding elements, for which DIN EN 131-4 is applicable.
One special form (and not a ladder in the literal sense) is the telescopic work platform. This is a bridging platform with telescopic ladder legs.

How does a telescopic ladder work?

In a telescopic straight ladder, the individual side rail elements are each connected by rungs or steps. Each element has a locking mechanism on the left and right. This allows the ladder to be extended rung by rung or step by step. The result is a ladder whose length can be flexibly adjusted. It is also possible to achieve especially compact transport dimensions.
Telescopic hinged ladders consist of fixed ladder sections that can be slid into each other rung by rung. The hinges allow the setup as a straight ladder and as a step ladder. As a step ladder, both sides can be extended to different lengths, which makes the telescopic ladder suitable for use on stairs and landings, for example.

Lightweight materials and compact dimensions create additional plus points when it comes to transport, for example with smaller vehicles, and less storage space.

What do you have to consider when using a telescopic ladder?

Before using telescopic ladders for the first time, read the operating instructions carefully and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Check the telescopic ladder for any damage before use every time.
Before climbing, check that all locking latches under the rungs are visible and that the slide latches or locking bolts are engaged.
Observe the maximum load capacity and do not exceed it.
Do not set up a straight ladder too steep or too flat (cf. elbow method) and choose suitable points to lean against (two-point contact surface).
For telescopic hinged ladders, make sure that the ladder joints are firmly engaged. Tip: the hinges usually have a visual indicator that shows the engaged position (C = closed / O = open).
A telescopic straight ladder may be stepped on up to 1 m below the top of the ladder (do not step on the top 3 rungs/steps).
Do not step on the top two rungs of the telescopic hinged ladder if it is set up as a step ladder.
When collapsing the telescopic ladder, make sure not to trap hands or fingers between the rungs or steps.

Care and maintenance for telescopic ladders

Service

Always keep your telescopic ladder clean, especially the telescopic side rails and the rung segments.
Dirt such as chips, paint splashes, adhesive residues, oil and other build-ups must be removed before collapsing the ladder.
Cloths and gentle cleaning agents or non-aggressive solvents are suitable for cleaning.
After cleaning, treat the telescopic rods with silicone spray if necessary.
Replace worn rubber feet or protective caps with original parts as needed to ensure safety and function.
Service and repair work must only be carried out by authorised specialists!

A side rail extension can be used to compensate for uneven floors and, in some cases, to make the ladder suitable for stairs.
A tool tray or tool bag can make work easier, for example on a telescopic hinged ladder.
Ground spikes can be used to ensure the telescopic ladder stands firmly on natural ground.
A hook-in step ensures safe footing on rung ladders. Not available for every telescopic ladder.
A wall bracket is the ideal way to store the telescopic ladder.
A carry bag makes things easier if you frequently transport a telescopic straight ladder and protects the ladder at the same time.
